These files document the military affairs of the state and Governor J. Proctor Knott's role as commander-in-chief of the Kentucky State Guard. Included are records of officers' commissions issued, requests for troops to help quell violence in several counties, and a number of letters and reports regarding the recurrent outbreaks of violence in Rowan County.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
